Comfort Food: Banana Bread

I started baking last year when we bought our first oven. I remember I started out baking cookies, brownies, cupcakes and cakes. As time went by I learned the essentials of baking that made a better baker. Patience is key and measuring is crucial.

I decided to look up for recipes of banana breads. Why? Simple, I love banana bread. Banana bread for me is a comfort food with it being slightly sweet with the bananas and earthiness from the molasses. I looked for a recipe that uses real bananas and not artificial flavoring.

I stumbled upon a recipe that was quite easy and tweaked it a little as I continued to bake banana bread that was moist and delicious. After many batches of trial and error I finally was able to “perfect” my banana bread recipe.

I am now offering my banana bread to people who would like to order πŸ™‚

Here is my price list:

Happy Eating!

Now That’s What You Call a Bulggogi!

I must admit that I was quite apprehensive to try out Korean food because the first time I tried kimchi it didn’t suit my taste. Well I was quite young that time so I guess my palette was not used to the strong flavors of kimchi.

Khen mentioned before that she wants to eat Korean food but we really never had the chance to eat in a Korean restaurant because most of the time we are rushing to eat when we watch a movie haha. Today was different we had 2 hours to kill before the movie and we decided to have something to eat.

The Seoul Garden is located right across Movieworld in Galleria.

The decoration is very interesting. We decided to sit in a booth and it was pretty (too bad I was not able to get a picture of the interior of the restaurant). The service was quite fast it took them less than 10 minutes to serve our side dish and our main.

I’m not very familiar with Korean food (except for the items I see being laid out in the Korean drama series that I watch) so I didn’t stray away from the things that I do know. We ordered the seafood pancake as our sides and the pork bulggogi bap for our main.

The pork bulggogi bap was very tasty. The meat was tender and flavorful. The kimchi was not too sour and not overpowering. The egg binds everything for a perfect bite. The spring onion enhances the bulggogi bap. In one word? YUM!

The seafood pancake was also good especially dipped with the red chili oil sauce. It was very very good! I think my eyes rolled to the back of my head because it was so good!

Because we just ordered two items from the menu I can guarantee that I will be back to try our the other items on the menu like the hotpots, fried dumplings and fried chicken.

Price is also reasonable prepare about 250.00 per person

Ramen Cool Gets High Scores

Ramen Cool is located at the corner of the East Kapitolyo and West Kapitolyo.

The restaurant caught my eye when Lander and I ate at 3 sister in Kapitolyo. When I saw the restaurant was interest was piqued.

My curiosity was finally satisfied after our VETs Update meeting last September 14. Ylai, Karie and I decided to have dinner there.

I give high points for the ambiance of the restaurant. It was very bright and clean. The decorations were beautiful. One of the walls was decorated with cherry blossoms.

The same goes for the service. The service was fast. The servers were knowledgeable about the menu and very attentive.

For the food, it was great. I enjoyed their Spicy Chicken so much that I made my own version of it. The Classic California Maki was also good. The ramen was very very good. The broth was flavorful and I love the hint of sesame.

The price is very reasonable at around 250.00 per person.

I highly recommend this restaurant to people who loves Japanese food. But be there early during dinner hours because parking might be a problem if you are late.

Birthday Dinner at Anix’s House of Kare Kare

I mentioned to my mom that there is a restaurant along Sumulong Highway that I would like to try and that is Anix’s House of Kare Kare. So for my birthday she said that she will treat me there. I told my mom to call the restaurant to make reservations for every time I pass by the parking lot is full. My mom was able to make a reservation for June 23 at 6:00 pm.

Fortunately when we arrived there were not a lot of people in the restaurant so finding a parking space was a breeze. Upon checking the menu we decided to get the best sellers, my mom did extensive research hehehe. We ordered the Kare Kare Classic, Mutya ng Antipolo and Crispy Pata. My mom also ordered Lumpiang Ubod but I passed because I know we ordered quite a lot already.

Just to clarify what is Mutya ng Antipolo, it is Anix’s version of a French Bouillabaisse. Now I’m a big fan of creamy seafood soup from Clam Chowder to Bouillabaisse. There is something about soup that warms my soul. When the soup arrived in a big bowl I was quite worried that we won’t be able to finish it but I was wrong because the soup was so good that me and my mom was able to finish the serving. The soup has just the right consistency not too thin and not too creamy. There were its of carrots and celery that added texture to the soup. They were also not stingy with the seafood. There were mussels, squid, fish, shrimps and crab. The squid was not tough at all which was surprising. The soup base was very flavorful and satisfying.

Mutya ng Antipolo

There is nothing special with the Crispy Pata when it arrived on the table but when you eat the meat it is so juicy and flavorful. Most of the time when you eat Crispy Pata there are parts when the meat is dry but with Anix’s Crispy Pata no part was dry. Though I would like the sauce to be more acidic but aside from that 2 thumbs up for the Crispy Pata.

Crispy Pata

The Kare Kare for me was not that spectacular though I’m not saying that it is not good for me it was just on the sweet side. The meat was soft and fall of the bone tender. For me the Kare Kare was not the star of the meal. I just had one serving then turned my attention to the Crispy Pata and Mutya ng Antipolo.

Kare Kare

If I will be asked if I will come back to Anix’s House of Kare Kare, YES I WILL. The restaurant has real potential. I would like to try other items in their menu like the Bangus ala Pobre and their Bulalo Steak. Though they need to improve their service. The servers were horsing around when we were eating and I do not appreciate that.

If you have foreigner friends or balikbayan friends and you would like to let them experience Filipino Food, Anix’s House of Kare Kare is a good choice. The price is quite reasonable and the food is good.

Note: Sissy if you are reading this we need to eat here when you come home for a visit πŸ™‚

Anix’s House of Kare Kare is located at #71 Sumulong Highway Sitio Kamias, Brgy. Mambugan, Antipolo City

Memories of Bizu Patisserie

When Filipino hears macaroons they usually think of the coconut dessert that we enjoy during fiestas but now we can also a pastry from France that is so far from the macaroons that we are familiar with.

And when we talk about French Macaroons only one patisserie comes to mind and that is Bizu Patisserie.

Bizu Patisserie caters to both those with a sweet tooth and for those who likes savory food. They also have an afternoon tea set that is perfect for friends who would love to sit down and catch up with each other. They also offer catering services.

But for me Bizu Patisserie means desserts! If you are a sweet tooth like me visit Bizu Patisserie at the following locationsΒ http://www.bizupatisserie.com/store_locations

Razon’s More Than Halo Halo and Palabok

Before I start with this post I would just like to clear that I’m not a bona fide food blogger but one thing is for sure I love food πŸ™‚

Whenever I’m going from the North I always pass by at Caltex in NLEX NB because of these 2 reasons:

1. Fashion Rack

2. Razon’s

Razon’s is popular because of their Halo Halo and Palabok but this post not about their 2 most famous menu items.

This is about their Caldereta and Kare Kare.

For people who knows me well knows that I love Caldereta…..there is something about stewed beef that I find so satisfying and comforting.

Razon’s version is one of the best I had….the best is so tender that you can pull it apart with your fork. The sauce is just the right tomato flavor with a hint of spiciness that does not overpower the sauce. The sauce is rich and flavor that it is so satisfying. No need for any condiments it is that good.

Beef Caldereta

Their Kare Kare is also very very good…..beef so tender and the sauce oh my the sauce is so yummy that you have to stop yourself from getting an extra order of rice. Their bagoong is also tasty without being too salty.

Here is a picture of their Palabok

Not all Razons Stores have these menu items so far I was just able to get it from their branch in Caltex and the one in San Fernando, Pampanga.

So for your next visit up north, visit Razons and try their Kare Kare and Caldereta I swear it to die for πŸ™‚

Hanging out at Azkals Sports Bar

I was able to watch 2 Global FC games in a span of 5 days. The first one was last Thursday and the most recent was yesterday. Both games were exciting and I was able to meet some Karie’s friends that she meet in Bacolod for the friendly between the Azkals and Guam.

After each game we headed to Azkals Sports Bar located in The Fort Strip. This is not my first time to go to the bar my first time was with Khen as I blog last March (https://abiggirlinasmallworld.wordpress.com/2012/03/09/first-visit-to-the-azkals-sports-bar/)

This time around I was with Karie and our new found friends Devie, Betchay and Ynna.

For our visit last Thursday, we were also joined by Jeffrey Christiaens, Ace Bright and Venus (sorry Venus I was not able to catch your last name). For Karie and I just came from our VETS Update we were quite hungry after the game so we decided to split an order of Cagara Country Fried Chicken and Paolo’s Salisbury Steak and a starter of Angel’s Nachos. (Please forgive the quality of the pic hehe I was using my camera phone)

Sharing an order of Cagara Country Fried Chicken and Paolo’s Salisbury Steak with Karie

The Cagara Country Fried Chicken was very good I really like the sauce and the side vegetable (I think because it was loaded with bacon hehehe). Between the chicken and the Salisbury Steak I preferred the chicken.

After eating our dinner we chatted with Jeffrey and Venus. Karie even taught Jeff a new Tagalog word “naaalala” now we just have to see if he remembers it hahaha. Venus is also very entertaining she regaled us with her stories of her meeting famous celebrities.

About quarter past 12:00 Patrick Reichelt arrived with his best friend Kevin. I find him very endearing for it was his birthday that day and he went out of his way to go to Azkals Sports Bar because Ace Bright called him to tell him that Betchay was waiting for him. He also greeted everyone when he arrived and said goodbye when he left.

We were again in the Azkals Sports Bar yesterday after the game of Global against Stallions. I decided to order Ace Quesadilla Burger while Karie again opted to have the Cagara Country Fried Chicken. That night we were able to enjoy our 10% discount and complimentary drink because we have the Azkals Sports BarΒ privilege card.

Ace Quesadilla Burger for me πŸ™‚

I always have fun whenever I go to Azkals Sports Bar because you get to spend time with people who loves the game as much as you do plus the food is great, the ambiance is nice and inviting and the staffs are very accommodating (especially the owner, Sir Mel πŸ™‚ )

So I invite anyone who loves football or is curious about football come and visit the Azkals Sports Bar in The Fort Strip you might even meet some of your favorite Azkal or find new friends πŸ™‚

1st Stop: Cafe Lidia

April 2, 2o12 dawned with an air of excitement in our house. It was not only the 1st day of my 9 days vacation but it was also the day that my sissy was coming home from Dubai.

I’ve been thinking of a place where I can bring her on her first day back home. I thought of Krisgard but dismiss it because it was a hot day and Krisgard is not airconditioned. I thought of the Azkals Sports Bar in The Fort Strip but was worried that since my sissy is not a sports fan (take note of any sports) she might not enjoy a sports bar. Then one day Jhing, Joan and I had lunch at Cafe Lidia and it hit me this was the perfect place where I can bring my sissy and her family.

After enduring the traffic from NAIA Terminal 1 to Cafe Lidia in Marikina we were finally seated and ready to order.

We started with the Nacho Grande and the Bufallo Wings.

Cafe Lidia’s Buffalo Wings is their best seller. You will see this item almost on every table. The wings are coated with a sauce that is not too spicy and with the right amount of sweetness. The Buffalo Wings are served with a sour cream sauce that really goes well with the wings.

The Nacho Grande is not your ordinary messy nachos of cheese and ground beef. Cafe Lidia’s Nacho Grande had olives, jalapeno peppers, tomatoes, onions, flavorful ground beef, cheese and tangy sour cream. The chips does not taste stale and because the cheese is served separately the chips are not soggy.

For the entrees we had porterhouse steak, Chicken Cordon Bleu and Roast Chicken.

Their porterhouse steak is very very good. I like a steak wherein you don’t have to put condiments to make it taste good and Cafe Lidia was able to accomplish that. The steaks was good on its own. Flavorful and had enough char to make it interesting.

The Chicken Cordon Bleu is also very good. The chicken is not dry and the cream sauce is very tasty. Both the porterhouse and the chicken had a siding of mashed potato and very light, refreshing salad.

I was not able to taste the Roast Chicken but from what I can see it was a good value for your money for the serving was huge!

Finally the best part of all meals DESSERT!

Felice and I went to the cake display to see what desserts we will get. We finally decided to get the sansrival, sylvannas, Midnight Dream Cake and a blueberry cheesecake.

The sansrival was to die for. The buttery icing with the soft layer of wafer melts in your mouth. My sissy even said that it can rival the sansrival of Betty’s Sansrival and for her to say that is high praise. The sylvannas was also very good. While the Midnight Dream Cake was a chocolate cake with caramel drizzle and marsmallow filling. Its very very good I was worried that the cake was too sweet but it was surprisingly not.

I was not able to taste the blueberry cheesecake for Felice was seated at the other side of the table hahaha but according to her and my sister it is also very good.

I’m very grateful to Joan for introducing Cafe Lidia to me. I found a restaurant that offers good food with reasonable prices and good ambience. The service is also superb, the waiters are very attentive and is willing to answer any inquiry with regards to the food.

If you have guests that you would like to treat or balikbayan family or friends or just to have a good time and good food I strongly recommend that you visit Cafe Lidia.

Cafe Lidia is located at 64 Calderon St. Calumpang, Marikina
